State of Indian Broking & Investing, 2026
Every figure below is counted directly from SEBI, NSE and AMFI's own published registers, the same primary sources this pipeline pulls for every other page on the site. Nothing here is a survey estimate or a rounded guess.
The broking universe is much bigger than the brands you know
48 consumer-facing brokers are what most Indian investors could name if asked. SEBI's own recognised-intermediary register lists 1,697 more: roughly 35 further registered entities for every household name, spanning commodity brokers, and depository participants registered with CDSL and NSDL. Separately, 445 entities appear on SEBI's own defaulter/expelled-broker list; that list draws on a different, longer historical record and is not a subset of the entities counted above.
| Registration category | Entities |
|---|---|
| Commodity broker | 800 |
| Depository participant (CDSL) | 704 |
| Depository participant (NSDL) | 315 |
The mutual fund industry, counted at the scheme level
AMFI's daily NAV file lists 3,376 distinct schemes (Direct/Regular and Growth/IDCW variants collapsed into one page per real fund, not counted separately) run by 53 Asset Management Companies. The five largest by scheme count:
| AMC | Distinct schemes |
|---|---|
| ICICI Prudential Mutual Fund | 635 |
| Nippon India Mutual Fund | 455 |
| Kotak Mahindra Mutual Fund | 258 |
| UTI Mutual Fund | 227 |
| HDFC Mutual Fund | 152 |
Listed markets
NSE currently lists 2,583 companies and 351 exchange-traded funds. This site tracks 25 of NSE's own published index-constituent lists, from Nifty 50 down to sector indices like Nifty PSU Bank and Nifty Realty.
Methodology: every count on this page is derived from the same SEBI, NSE and AMFI source files BrokerLens ingests for its registry, stock, ETF and mutual fund pages, snapshotted at publish time. See methodology and sources for exactly how each figure is computed and how often it refreshes.
