Fact-Checked & Verified against primary NSE, BSE and SEBI disclosures
As Indian retail investing transitions into digital-first smartphone platforms, safeguarding your demat account from phishing attacks, SIM swapping, and unauthorized debit transactions is critical.
1. NSDL and CDSL Online Freeze Facility
SEBI mandates that both central depositories provide retail investors with an instant online freeze facility. When enabled, no debit instruction slip (DIS) or API instruction can debit shares from your account.
- CDSL Easiest: Login to the CDSL website, navigate to 'Account Freeze', and select either a debit freeze on specific ISINs or your entire 16-digit BO ID.
- NSDL Speed-e: Log in with your credentials and activate the 'Freeze / Unfreeze' module for individual holdings or complete trading accounts.
2. Best Security Hygiene Practices
- Enable Two-Factor Authentication (TOTP) via authenticator apps (Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator) instead of SMS OTPs.
- Verify monthly NSDL/CDSL Consolidated Account Statements (CAS) sent directly from depositories to detect any discrepancies.
- Revoke inactive Power of Attorney (PoA) or DDPI authorizations if you no longer actively trade through old broker accounts.
